Shabnam, a plastic surgery nurse assistant. Shabnam herself has undergone a numebr of operations to her nose, eyes and mouth.
The Afghan middle classes are turning to cosmetic surgery to make their noses larger to conform to the local sense of beauty. Many patients are Hazaras, an ethnic minority who have small, flat noses, but others are Pashtun or Tajik girls who want to look perfect for their wedding day. Most patients undergo nosejobs, which involve removing cartilage from their rib, under local anaesthetic as Afghans appear to have a higher tolerance of pain. The whole procedure costs about $300.
